Labour time, which is why it costs more than a wash. A wash takes 30 to 45 minutes. A proper detail takes 2 to 4 hours depending on vehicle size, most of it spent on machine polishing and the interior deep clean. That time difference is the actual cost driver, not a markup.

Why quotes vary between shops

The most common reason two detailing quotes differ significantly is that one of them isn’t actually the same service. A quote that’s a fraction of a competitor’s is often skipping the engine bay, the trunk, or the machine polishing step entirely, effectively offering a better wash rather than a real detail. How to compare quotes fairly

Ask specifically whether the quote includes:

• Engine bay cleaning and dressing
